The purpose of this position is to optimize the economic impact of convention and leisure visitors to Portland by collecting, developing, maintaining, and disseminating research findings, recommendations and actionable insights. This position will require a strong working relationship with departments within Travel Portland, as well as the Oregon Convention Center, our hotel community and other key partners.  This position will rely primarily on a strong analytical skillset, along with the ability to communicate results effectively.

Job Description

 Summary:

The purpose of this position is to optimize the economic impact of convention and leisure visitors to Portland by collecting, developing, maintaining, and disseminating research findings, recommendations and actionable insights. This position will require a strong working relationship with departments within Travel Portland, as well as the Oregon Convention Center, our hotel community and other key partners.  This position will rely primarily on a strong analytical skillset, along with the ability to communicate results effectively.   Key factors for success are:

              

  • Evaluation of the outlook for the convention and leisure market in Portland. With the growth of the destination, rapid increase in hotel supply, and addition of a Convention Center Hotel, the focus will be on maximizing future opportunities. These potential prospects will partially be informed by strategic research of past data, as well as strong evaluation of current market conditions.
  • Stakeholder engagement will be paramount to ensure alignment with all key entities, and create collaboration of understanding for future business that is best for the city of Portland.

Essential Functions:

  • Convention market:
    • Responsible for the design, development and management of the research program to increase internal and external understanding of convention and meeting strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for Portland.
    • Make recommendations through in-depth analysis of historical, current, and future market data.
    • Plan, schedule and lead regular research meetings, both internal and external.
    • Provide targeted and timely communication of results, challenges and actionable insights to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Strategically align convention center, hotel, and meeting planner needs for all future business, evaluating compression impacts, time of year, and market segment opportunities
    • Calculate economic impact from all meetings and conventions
    • Provide broad analysis of existing data from both internal and external sources
  • Portland's hotel market:
    • Research and assess historical occupancy, average daily rate, and revenue per available room.
    • Create citywide forecasting for hotel performance.
    • Share findings with internal and external partners.
  • Domestic and international consumers:
    • Provide broad analysis of existing data from both internal and external sources.
    • Identify and implement additional research opportunities to support international and domestic travel programs.
    • Make recommendations through in-depth analysis of historical, current, and future market data.
    • As assigned, provide analysis of web analytics, search trends, conversions, consumer behavior and data, and social insights to help inform Travel Portland's marketing strategy.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to identify, track and maintain KPIs.
  • Manage all research projects, external vendors and research budget.
  •  Other duties as assigned by CSO and senior management.

 Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibility but may provide leadership training and guidance to new staff and/or assist with orientation of new members of the staff.

Education and/or Experience; Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

  • Bachelor's Degree with major course work in marketing, statistics, mathematics, economics or business administration required
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience conducting business related research, interpreting findings, and presenting results to senior staff members
  • Previous leadership experience required

 Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong analytical experience essential

Familiarity w/ Revenue Management principles.

Ability to utilize research and data to solve business problems

Experience with advanced statistics

Highly motivated, able to work independently and in teams

Knowledge of Portland and region wide attractions, meeting venues, culture, dining, and lodging preferred

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and general knowledge of office equipment

Knowledge of information management systems

Advanced skills in professional communication including verbal, written and telephone

Skilled in personal and professional organization and time management

Skilled in presentation and public speaking

Skilled in analyzing complex reports

Ability to work effectively with a diverse cross section of people

Ability to successfully and professionally represent Travel Portland

Ability to perform consistently in a fast-paced, multi task environment with frequent interruptions

Ability to achieve goals in high pressure situations

Ability to appropriately handle confidential information

Ability to drive a vehicle safely while communicating to and educating clients

Ability to travel independently via commercial transportation

Ability to attend approximately 8-10 tradeshows, conventions or sales trips per year

Ability to attend client dinners approximately 1-2 times per week

 

Physical Demands / Work Environment:  

General office environment: Majority of work is completed in a general office environment with exposure to moderate levels of noise in a well-lit, well-ventilated and moderately paced environment.  Continuously required to see and/or respond to visual cues, hear and/or respond to verbal/audio cues.  Frequently required to walk, sit, and perform repetitive motions of hands and wrists.  Occasionally required to stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, bend, or reach with hands and arms.  Continuously required to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects up to 10 pounds; frequently required to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects up to 25 pounds; rarely required to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects up to 50 pounds.

Rarely required to work near moving mechanical parts or be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
